Newsletter Issue #2 — On Leaving the UK, Invasion, Don’t Look Up, and turning the page on 2021
Hey, I hope that everyone is doing great, and I wish everyone the best for 2022. Whatever your dreams are, I hope they become reality.
As you might know if you’ve been following me on Twitter, I was in the UK for the first semester of the school year, more precisely in Exeter.
I have to say that the University of Exeter’s campus is the most beautiful I’ve visited, even though it’s on a hill and it’s not super great to walk up there every time to go to class. I had a great time in the UK, and contrary to what I was expecting all the people I met were very kind :)
I’m not sure I would recommend spending only one semester in one place if you have the choice, as it’s quite short and doesn’t really allow to build strong friendships (also my fault that I didn’t try enough, that’s true) and I would have loved to discover the UK even more. But of course, I don’t complain that I’ll get to spend time both in Exeter and in the US.
The series and movie recommendations for this newsletter are going to be Invasion (sort of) and Don’t Look Up (definitely).
Invasion is an Apple TV+ series which streamed in the fall, and which I was really looking forward to since it was announced in the spring. I would be unable to note this series, or even to say if I liked it or not. It’s soooooo slow at times, it makes me rage that they even produced something like that. But the story is on the other hand very interesting and it’s a completely different take on what an alien invasion would feel like, focusing on the experience of people living it rather than the aliens themselves. My hope is that they understand what they did bad and make it better for the second season. It’s not what we’re used to watching these days, and that’s why I still recommend it.
Don’t Look Up is a no-brainer. Because of what it depicts, it’s one of the most important movies I’ve ever watched, and I don’t think I need to write more, just please watch it if you haven’t already.
And finally, I want to write a few words about the year that just ended.
In 2021, I voted for the first time (for myself, how great is that!), got my driver license, worked too much according to my girlfriend (not for school…), had the opportunity to be part of the presidential campaign which had a profound impact on how I see my political life moving forward, I discovered what living a public media shitstorm from the inside feels like (not fun), I spent a lot of time on high-speed trains (fun), and I think I gained a lot of confidence in being who I want to be.
But more importantly, I met a lot of great people, some of whom I’m happy to now call friends. I am so glad that I had all of you to spend the year with, and I just hope to go through 2022 with you as well, because seeing how this new year scares me, I am going to need it.
